Alligator. Sanibel Island, Florida, USA, 2001

We visited Sanibel Island to see the many bird species and hopefully get a glimpse of a gator in the wild. I was not disappointed! We also saw this suburban gator.

  1. Great shot Ruth, is that a regular occurrence in Florida? If I lived there I’d have to discourage the kids from playing in the garden. I love to see wildlife in the neighbourhood but I’d be a tad nervous if there were alligators!

    • Hi Finn,

In certain parts of Florida it’s fairly common. For example, on Sanibel Island we saw them in the canals, in the refuge areas (where you would expect to see them), and also in a hotel fountain! A friend told me that the highway that runs through the middle of Florida is called Alligator Alley.
